Season 2004 New Large-Flowered Hybrids
Next year's brand-new large-flowered plants are ready now. The total is just 44 plants, at this stage. This includes 20 brand new C. patens seedlings, the details of which are below. Some of the current year's vines have been retained - they will often produce early flowers in the new season, from this old wood. Most of this present foliage will rot away in the next few weeks as winter comes in.

Mature seed-head of Clematis patens species
This year will see the culmination of a four-year programme to raise several seedlings of Clematis patens to their first flowers. There are 16 new plants, derived from seed from 6 different sources. In addition there are two further new plants from 2003. For comparison purposes, a known C. patens plants' flowers will be included. (This will be a C. patens acquired from M. Oviatt-Ham several years ago, a lovely blue form, with red anthers, reputed to have been involved in some of the original early patens hybridising in the UK, many years ago, now.)
An important point: there is no GUARANTEE that plants grown from seed labeled C. patens will prove to be C. patens, every time. It is very difficult to get seed which you KNOW is the pure species, and often, with clematis, hybrids can, and frequently do arise! One has to say "raised as" C. patens, only.
